Mentored Research Academy - R01 Bootcamp

The UMMS Mentored Research Academy: R01 Boot Camp is a multi-tiered, pilot program funded by Dean James O. Woolliscroft to support and increase the success rate of Medical School faculty applying for their first NIH Research Project Grant (R01). The R01 Boot Camp is an eight-month program (Jan. 2013 – Sept. 2013).  For application information for both mentors and mentees, click here

Patient Safety and Quality Leadership (PASQUAL) Scholars Program

The University of Michigan Medical School has established a Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Scholars Program for medical school faculty who wish to become clinical leaders in quality and patient safety within the UM Health System and beyond.   The Program provides an academic and applied foundation in principles and methods for improving the quality and safety of patient care, along with skills in leadership, teaching and scholarship in these areas.  Graduates of this program will be well positioned to direct quality and safety initiatives and to facilitate education and research on quality and safety in patient care.

The inaugural offering will be a 5-month program from January 31-June 27, 2013.  Up to 10 Scholars will attend half-day sessions on Thursday afternoon each week (1:00 pm - 4:30 pm).

Essential Skills for Successful Leadership - January 17, 2013

This one-day workshop is designed to assist faculty in developing the essential leadership and management skills necessary to run a lab, start a program or manage a center or division. This workshop will highlight topics such as hiring, leadership, management, diversity, communication, conflict resolution, and managing performance.

Time:  7:30am-4:30pm

Management of Chronic Pain Workshop - All Roads Don't Lead to Opioids - January 23, 2013, 8:30am-11:00am, Palmer Commons Forum Hall (4th Floor)

Who should attend:  Anyone who prescribes opioids

Objectives: 

  • Recognize that chronic pain syndrome is often a centralized illness
  • Describe the steps to follow in the diagnosis of management of chronic pain
  • Outline tools and principles for management of adjuvant pain medications

Crucial Confrontations - March 5, 2013 and April 9, 2013 (follow-up)

This will be a 1-day workshop, with a 90 minute follow-up session, on Crucial Confrontations. Participants will work to acquire tools for resolving broken promises, violated expectations, and bad behavior. In this workshop participants will develop the skills to step up to controversial issues, and then professionally discuss them in a way that makes it safe for everyone to speak. As a result, people share their best ideas, make wise choices, and then act on their choices with conviction.

Time:  7:30am-4:30pm (March 5, 2013) + 90 minute follow-up session April 9, 2013

Where:   Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest (March 5, 2013)

Linkage Leadership Institute - March 11-12 and May 6-7, 2013

The Medical School and Health System Human Resources have partnered with Linkage, Inc. to offer the Linkage Leadership Institute  which focuses on the development of the individual senior leader. This world-class program is an accelerated 4-day immersive learning experience that draws on the leader's 360 leadership and personality assessment data and includes 1:1 feedback/coaching.  The Leadership Academy's curriculum focuses on 3 major themes; Leading SelfLeading Others and Leading for Results. The first two days will concentrate on self and teams and the last two days on the organization (specifically leading/managing change and driving results).

The Leadership Academy includes interactive and aligned development programs, leveraging a dynamic mix of concepts, activities, practical tools, self-assessments, case studies, and team learning.  All training will be held at the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest .  This program is the top tier of Leadership Development within the UMHS and is designed for Senior Leadership such as Division Chiefs, Section Heads, Program or Medical Directors, and Chairs.  Participants are currently selected through a nomination process.  For more information contact Sonya Jacobs.

Master's Series Leadership - April 26, 27 & 30, May 1 & 2, 2012;  November 1, 2, 5, 6 & 7, 2012 in NCRC

The purpose of the Masters Series Leadership Program is to provide an opportunity for UMHS managers to attain the leadership competencies needed to successfully guide UMHS through today¿s constantly changing environment and into the future.

This workshop is a combination of assessment, discussion, skill practice exercises, and practical application. It is highly experiential and interactive. Participants learn from each other, discover through exploration of resources, role play, and story telling based on past experiences, and work with each other to complete assignments.

HHMI Helps Summer Institute Expand to Regional Sites
New funding from HHMI will be used to scale up a successful summer program that aims to enable thousands of college and university science faculty to receive intensive professional development designed to improve undergraduate biology education. The $3 million grant will expand the National Academies Summer Institute for Undergraduate Education in Biology from a single location at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to a total of nine regional centers over the next five years.

There's a tool you have access to which allows you to:

  • Identify potential collaborators and discover new relationships
  • Review where other authors have been published and the grants they've received
  • Track your own publications and citations
  • Publicize your expertise, increasing their visibility across the research community while enabling students to discover mentors and new areas of research
