M-FACTIR is a tool to assist training grant administrators, principal investigators, and others in the creation and renewal of training grant applications. Its two main purposes is to:

Finding Faculty and Trainees
The 'Faculty and Trainees' tab allows you to find a faculty member or trainee by searching for their name, UMID, or uniqname. The list of Search Results can be sorted by any column, or filtered by typing one or more characters into the 'Search Within' box. Clicking on the Faculty Member's or Trainee's name will take you to their profile.
The Faculty and Trainee search queries the entire university, allowing you to view and enter information about researchers in any department in any school. Due to the potentially large number of results for name searches, you may see a warning that there were too many results to display. In this case, try entering more search terms, or use a more unique identifier such as UMID or uniqname.
Also from this page you can bulk upload Mentor-Trainee Relationships (relationships for multiple trainees across multiple faculty), via a link below the Search box. See Section 3 for more information.
Faculty/Trainee Profile Page
The profile page is unique to the chosen individual you are viewing, showing their name, uniqname, UMID, Commons ID, as well as their mentoring history and grant participation (if a faculty member) or their training history (if a trainee). The information on this page is both archival (showing historic relationships and grant participation) as well as current/future (representing current relationships and even allowing future relationships to be set up).
The data in each table are initially sorted by date, and can be resorted by other attributes by clicking on the desired attribute's column header. Information can also be filtered by typing one or more characters into the 'Search Within' box. The names (or training grant numbers) listed in each table are clickable to the corresponding profile/detail page for that person (or training grant).
This information on this page can be added/deleted/changed by uploading mentor-trainee relationships via a CSV file (see Section 3).
There are multiple levels of 'Last Updated' information on this page. Each record (row) has its own date on which it was updated; hovering your cursor over the 'i' icon will show this detail. Each table also has its own last updated date, representing the most recent update for any of the data in that table. Similarly, the entire page has a date, showing when the most recent update was made for any of the data on the page.
Finding Training Grants
The 'Training Grant' tab allows you to find a Training Grant by searching for its Award ID, PAF number, or title. Clicking on the Training Grant will take you to its details.
The Training Grant search queries eResearch, allowing you to view and enter information for Training Grants (PAFs) entered in that system.
For a new or renewal application, you must first create a PAF in eResearch before you can find it in this application.
Training Grant Detail Page
The grant detail page is unique to the chosen grant you are viewing, showing its Award ID, Contact PD/PI, and a summary of the number of faculty and clearly associated trainees, as well as detailed lists of the grant's Phases/Versions (PAFs), PI's, faculty members, and clearly associated trainees. The information on this page is both archival (showing historic participants and grant details) as well as current/future (representing those on the grant now and even allowing future participants to be attached).
The data in each table are initially sorted by date, and can be resorted by other attributes by clicking on the desired attribute's column header. Information can also be filtered by typing one or more characters into the 'Search Within' box.The names listed in each table are clickable to the corresponding profile page for that person.
Some of the information on this page can be added/deleted/changed by adding participants (faculty members or clearly associated trainees) via a CSV file (see Section 4). Other information, including PI's and Phases/Versions, is institutionally sourced and view-only, meaning it cannot be changed here.
Biosketches can be attached attached to PI's and participating faculty by clicking the Choose File button (or Replace button if one already exists) and uploading a new file. (Any standard document format is acceptable -- Word/.doc, PDF, plain text/.txt, etc.) Clicking the trash can icon will remove the current biosketch from that individual without attaching a new one. Some participants will already have biosketches, preloaded from M-Train.

Uploading Mentor/Trainee Relationships
You can upload one or more mentor/trainee relationships from a comma separated file (CSV) from the Upload Mentor/Trainee Relationships tab.
To edit existing information, click the download button on the mentor/trainee relationship table. Open the file in excel, make changes, and save the file.
To upload a file, simply drag and drop the file or click the Choose File button, then click Submit.Click here to access a template and instructions for using it.
Uploading Participating Faculty & Clearly Associated Trainees
You can upload one or more participating faculty and clearly associated trainees to a training grant from a comma separated file (CSV) after you have searched for and selected a training grant to work with (see Section 2 for more info).
To edit existing information, click the download button on the participating faculty or clearly associated trainees table. Open the file in excel, make changes, and save the file.

For clarity and ease of use, it is recommended to maintain separate lists for faculty and clearly associated trainees (a CSV file for faculty, and another for clearly associated trainees, instead of combining them together).Click here to access a template and instructions for using it.
The second main feature of M-FACTIR is a launchpad into a suite of comprehensive reports that are useful for entering training grant information into NIH's xTRACT. The reports combine information entered into M-FACTIR with hundreds of other trainee, faculty, and training grant data from institutional sources across the university. NIH sample data tables and field definitions will aid in understanding the data provided by M-FACTIR.
