Masters Series Leadership Program



About the Program

The purpose of the Masters Series Leadership Program is to develop the leadership competencies necessary to lead in an ever-changing health care environment. The target audience is mid-level managers with programmatic responsibilities.

Change Management serves as the foundation for this five-day program. Participants learn through a combination of assessment, discussion, skill practice, practical application and sharing ideas with one another.   Topics include:

  • Change Management
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Decision Making
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Finance
  • Innovation
  • Systems Thinking
  • Diversity and Inclusion

Participants, also, identify a project on which to focus throughout the program. Each participant leaves the program with a preliminary business case for their project.

Participants describe this program as "challenging, demanding, fun and rewarding."

Target Audience:  faculty and administrative managers

Recommended Criteria:

  • Three or more years management experience inside or outside the organization and one year after completing UMHS Foundations for Successful Leadership training.  This requirement will ensure that the participants are working from the same foundation of supervisory knowledge and will have had the opportunity to apply the learning from Foundations.

Responsibility: currently in a management role overseeing a business unit or program with three or more staff members.

Candidate Selection Process


  • Candidates for the Masters Series Leadership Program are nominated by any member of senior leadership. The senior leader writes a letter or email addressed to Jane Pettit(janep@umich.edu) at UMHS Human Resources Organizational Effectiveness and Diversity with the following information:
    • Name of nominator
    • Name of nominee
    • Title and Department (of nominee)
    • Name of nominee's manager
    • Brief description of why the program would be appropriate for the nominee

  • UMHS HR initiates a review process of all nominees. Typically the sessions are held twice a year with 15-20 participants in each session. 
  • UMHS HR notifies the nominees who have been selected with dates of the upcoming sessions. 
    In the case that the nominee is deemed ineligbile, HR will respond appropriately.
  • Nominees confirm attendance at the session with Teresa Gasiciel (tgas@umich.edu). Any nominee accepted into the program may defer participation one time without an additional nomination. After deferring two times, HR will notify the nominee and nominator of the nominee's status.

After an individual is notified of their nomination, they will have 12 months to enroll. After 12 months, they will need to be re-nominated.

One-week prior to the beginning of the session, participants are required to have completed the following assignments:
