Microsoft Windows Defender is installed by MSIS to protect spyware from installing on Windows machines. Defender is scheduled to run once a day, usually as a background process. Defender also offers real-time protection from spyware by default. Automatic scanning and real-time protection can be enabled/disabled under the Tools > Options menus.

Note that Defender specifically protects the machine against spyware. VirusScan is used to protect against viruses.

Manual Scanning
  1. Click on the Start menu, go to Programs and select Windows Defender.
  2. Click "Scan." This will run a complete scan of your computer and alert you to any spyware it finds. If it does find spyware, it will prompt you for action (i.e., delete, quarantine, etc).
Scheduling a Scan
  1. Click on the Start menu, go to Programs and select Windows Defender.
  2. Click "Tools. Click Options.
  3. Change the settings under Automatic scanning as desired. It is strongly recommended that Defender have an automatic scanning schedule set up.
