Outlook - UMHS Exchange Configuration

The UMHS Exchange server address is email.med.umich.edu, so if the client configuration fails, enter that address as the Server name and Outlook should be able to auto-configure.

Windows Outlook 2010
MCIT also provides instructions for configuring Outlook on a Windows workstation, including instructions for earlier versions of Outlook, though the computer must be either located on the UMHS network or have a VPN connection to access the link:

Configuration of Outlook is more easily achieved using the Windows interface than within the Outlook client itself.

  1. Navigate to the Mail Settings
    • Windows XP: In the lower left corner of the Desktop, click the Start button, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    • Windows Vista or 7: In the lower left corner of the Desktop, click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Mail icon.
    Windows 7 on 64-bit Workstations
    When using Windows 7, if the Mail icon is not available, the computer is likely using a 64-bit processor. In the upper right corner of the Control Panel window, locate the Search box and type mail. In the search results, double-click the Mail (32-bit) icon.
  3. In the Mail Setup - Outlook window, click the Email Accounts... button.
  4. In the Account Settings window, click the New... button.
  5. In the Add New Account window, select the Manually configure server settings or additional server types option and click the Next button.
  6. Select the Microsoft Exchange or other compatible service option and click the Next button.
  7. Enter the following information, but do NOT click the Next button:
    Server outlook.umhs.med.umich.edu
    Use Cached Exchange Mode CHECKED
    User Name uniquename@med.umich.edu
    (replacing uniquename with your uniquename)
  8. In order to allow the computer to communicate with the UMHS Exchange server outside the UMHS network, the connection to the server must be set to use HTTP. Click the More Settings... button.

    a. A Microsoft Exchange window will appear. Click the Connection tab.
    b. Toward the bottom of the window, in the Outlook Anywhere area, place a check in the Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP box and, if necessary, click the Exchange Proxy Settings... button.

    c. In the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings window, enter the following information:

    Use this URL... email.med.umich.edu
    Only connect to proxy servers... msstd:email.med.umich.edu
    Use this authentication... Basic Authentication
  9. Close the Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings window by click the OK button.
  10. Close the Microsoft Exchange window by click the OK button.
  11. In the Add New Account window, click the Next button.
  12. A Connect to outlook.umhs.med.umich.edu window will appear prompting for a User name and Password.

    Enter the following information and click the OK button:

    User name UMHS\uniquename
    (replacing uniquename with your uniquename)
    Password Your Level 2 password
    The uniquename must always be prefixed with "UMHS\" in order for authentication to work. If, at any time, something else is placed before the uniquename, replace it with UMHS.
  13. A Mail Delivery Notification window will appear. Click the OK button.
  14. In the Add New Account window, click the Finish button. Close any remaining open windows and begin using Outlook to access email.

Macintosh Outlook 2011
  1. At the top of the screen, under the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. At the bottom of the column on the left side of the window, click the + symbol and then click Exchange...
  3. Enter the following information:
    Email Address uniquename@med.umich.edu
    (replacing uniquename with your uniquename)
    Method User Name and Password
    User Name UMHS \ Your uniquename
    Password Your current Level-2 Password
    Configure automatically uncheck
    Server email.med.umich.edu
  4. Click the Add Account button.
  5. Outlook will now attempt to configure itself. If the user information is correct, the new account will be listed on the left side of the window. Close the Accounts window and begin using Outlook to access email.
