Novell - Map a Network Drive

MCIT uses Novell to provide access to UMHS file servers, which are usually named with a core prefix (e.g., core01t1). Drive mappings to UMHS servers usually occur automatically after authenticating in the Novell Login box when a Core workstation (one with a TermID) boots, but non-Core workstations with Novell client software must map the drive manually.

Access to MCIT servers require a Novell password, which is commonly called the Level-2 password. Instructions for changing or resetting a Novell (Level-2) Password can be found on the Level-2 Password page.

Mapping a Novell Drive

The following instructions assume the individual mapping the Novell drive is not using a Core workstation.

Authenticate to Novell

  1. Right-click the red N in the lower-right hand corner of the screen and click Novell Login. The Novell Login window will appear.
  2. In the Novell Login window, click the Advanced... button and provide the following information in the appropriate field:
    • Username: UM uniquename
    • Password: Level-2 Password
    • Tree: idm-dir2 or UMMED
    • Context: people.med.umich.edu (unless the field auto-populates) or med.users
    • Server: medinfo.med.umich.edu (or 141.214.2.20)
  3. Click the OK button.
The current version of the Novell client can be obtained at the following link:

Map the Network Drive

  1. Right-click the red N in the lower-right hand corner of the screen and click the Novell Map Network Drive option.
  2. Select a drive letter to use for the drive mapping. Choose a letter that is not currently in use, and after the letter H, in order to avoid any conflicts with other drives.
  3. In the Enter the network path to the resource field, type in the server domain name followed by the volume name in the the following pattern: \\servername\volume
    Examples
    \\core06t2\MED_RSRCH\CDBDSM
    \\core07t2\PSYCH_SHARED\Shared\Smith\
    \\MedInfo\Web

  4. Place a check in the Check to make folder appear as top most level and Check to always map this drive letter when you start Windows boxes.
  5. Click the Map button.

Remote Server Access to UMHS Servers

In order to access any of the UMHS servers from home, a VPN client must be installed on the machine. Generally, a user must first log into the machine with the Workstation Only box checked at the login window to access the desktop and VPN client software. After authenticating with VPN client and receiving a message that the connection was successful, a connection to the server is possible through the Novell client:

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  2. Double-click the icon for the mapped drive. The login prompt will appear and the drive can be reconnected after logging in with the Novell password.

If the Novell authentication window does not appear, try first logging into Novell directly:

  1. Follow the instructions from the Authenticate to Novell section on this page.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Double-click the icon for the mapped drive.
