New!!!  Opportunity to Decompress: Drop-in Mindfulness Meditation Sessions for Faculty

Beginning Thursday, May 15th through Thursday, August 14th, complimentary weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation sessions will be available at noon for all Medical School faculty.  These will consist of two back-to-back half-hour practice sessions, the first from 12:00-12:30pm and the second from 12:30-1:00pm. Those who wish to participate can come to one or both of the sessions.  The sessions will be lightly guided by Drs. Rita Benn and Libby Robinson.  All faculty, with or without meditation experience, are welcome!  No registration necessary.  See the flyer for dates and location.

New!!!  Negotiation: An Essential Adaptive Leadership Skill

Medical school faculty negotiate constantly over issues like, salaries, lab space, and authorship on research papers.  At Ki ThoughtBridge, we define negotiation as, “Any attempt to influence and persuade others to do what you want done.”  Roger Fisher, co-author of, Getting To Yes, Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, Roger Fisher and William Ury.  Those negotiations can be especially challenging when the negotiation is with a peer, another doctor or other faculty over whom you have no authority or control or when you are negotiating with those who have more authority, power or control. 

This day long negotiation workshop will equip you with a framework and set of tools designed to help faculty prepare for, and conduct effective negotiations.  The workshop is interactive.  Participants will learn by practicing, first on generic negotiation cases, and then on real issues that faculty must negotiate every day.  The tools and processes taught are based on cutting edge theory and practice developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project, a think tank at Harvard Law School which specializes in helping groups and individuals learn to deal constructively with their differences.

Clinical Teaching Series

Teaching Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in the Context of Everyday Clinical Work - Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm  BSRB Seminar Rooms

This workshop will help faculty teach and model basic Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QI/PS) principles to identify and solve problems in everyday clinical work. Faculty are the most important teachers in this environment and having faculty teach basic problem identification and solving is increasingly important as national and academic priorities emphasize improving the safety, quality, and efficiency of health care.

Facilitated by Rishi Bakshi, DO

At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Identify simple problems to improve quality and safety in everyday work and in the work lives of clinical trainees.
  • Explain some key, basic principles in systematic problem solving relevant to everyday clinical work.
  • Enable clinical trainees to identify and address simple QI/PS issues in the everyday clinical setting.

Target audience:  Individuals familiar with basic QI/PS principles who want to practice teaching/mentoring simple problem solving approaches in everyday clinical work.

Interpersonal Skills Development

Crucial Accountability (formerly Crucial Confrontations) - November 6, 2014 with follow-up on December 3, 2014

This will be a 1-day workshop, with a 90 minute follow-up session, on Crucial Accountability. This course teaches a straightforward, step-by-step process for identifying and resolving performance gaps, strengthening accountability, eliminating inconsistency, and reducing resentment. It uses video, group discussions, skill practice, and real-life application to make the course both entertaining and engaging.

Making the most of your presentation recommends a systematic approach to preparing and delivering effective oral presentations. Among others, it covers structure, slides, and delivery, as well as stage fright. Needless to say, it also endeavors to be a model of the principles it advocates - an oral presentation that attendees can learn from by way of example. 

An engineer from the Louvain School of Engineering and a PhD in applied physics from Stanford University, Jean-luc Doumont will facilitate this session.  He enjoys nothing more than standing in front of a group of professionals, challenging everything they thought they knew, provoking or facilitating a discussion, structuring their thoughts, sharpening their skills, and, importantly, arousing enthusiasm.

Learn how to develop scientific papers that are clear, concise and publishable.  Participants are encouraged to bring working abstracts or papers to get help from senior writers and peers.

1) Outline ways to bring greater clarity and consistency to a scientific paper;

2) Describe the features that distinguish papers accepted for publication;

3) Organize the major sections of a scientific paper;

4) Create more effective tables and figures; and

5) Consult with peers to assist in effective scientific writing.

Linkage Leadership Institute - September 30, October 1 and November 18-19, 2014

The Medical School and Health System Human Resources have partnered with Linkage, Inc. to offer the Linkage Leadership Institute  which focuses on the development of the individual senior leader (such as Division Chiefs, Section Heads, Program or Medical Directors and Chairs). This world-class program is an accelerated 4-day immersive learning experience that draws on the leader's 360 leadership and personality assessment data and includes 1:1 feedback/coaching.
